Do you have student who is up for a new challenge?
For those who are thinking about a career in communications or who simply enjoy writing, we have just the thing: the Boston University Summer Journalism Institute, presented by the New England Center for Investigative Reporting (NECIR).
For the last year 10 years, NECIR has taught high school students core skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing, with a focus on hands-on experience in and around the city of Boston. (Our motto is: Make Boston Your Beat.) Students are taught by award-winning journalists, such as Pulitzer Prize winner Lara Salahi, who show them how to follow facts and get to the heart of stories affecting communities.
Last year, for example, our students spoke to policy makers about climate change, reported from a massive immigration march, and covered a Senator's town hall meeting. They learned how to interview strangers, ask probing questions and assemble it all in a concise story on deadline. Students were challenged to step outside their comfort zone – and experience life as a working journalist.
Over each two-week session, students learn practical skills, but they also get a taste of campus and city life. Students have the chance to:
Meet with a Boston University representative to discuss the college admissions process
Explore what it's like living in a residence hall and studying in a university environment
Experience Boston museums, historical sites and neighborhoods during free time
Two-week sessions begin on June 24, July 8, and July 22.
Do you know students who would be a good fit for the Summer Journalism Institute? Encourage them to learn more by visiting www.necir.org/summer and apply soon, as spots are limited.
If they are accepted into the program and pay the registration by April 1, they will receive a special $400 discount off tuition with the online discount code of: BUSUMMER19.
